I have just recently listed a pair of vintage 1972 Johnson S.M.G. Mark II double barrel spearguns on eBay, unfortunately eBay has removed this listing as they believe them to be weapons (can’t blame them). They have been in my family since 1982 and were never used by us. These are powerful spearguns and the extra barrel allows for either another barbed tipped spear or for protection against sharks a powerful “Sleekline Powerhead Spearshaft”! One complete Sleekline Powerhead is included with 2 shafts, there is also another powerhead make unknown but appears to use the same sub-ammo sleeves and 1 extra powerhead tube.

I found in my garage NOT LONG AGO an Original SMG (NEW IN THE BOX-Serial Number 40066) in the shipping box with all equipment it was shipped with. The Colored Plastic cartridge holders, blanks, spear shafts, spear heads, Can of Lubricant (oil) now empty from evaporation or leakage) Instruction Booklet, Schematic and spare parts drawings, etc.

This gun was Sold out of New Zealand (has Made In New Zeeland label on it) and attempts to remove the word ‘Johnson’ from the Instruction Booklet are apparent in some places but left alone in others. I tend to believe Johnson went out of business and the New Zeland Company bought the gun and/or sold it under their name as the “Mark IV SMG Harpoon Gun”. Plastic shot shells are colored Red, Purple, Yellow, Blue and Green delivering different power levels of the spear. One Spear is essentially a Bank Stick using power from the .22 Cal. Blank to subdue a fish.

This gun has never been fired, new in the box (however the box is showing lots of wear since it is over 40+ approximate years old.)

The SMG was an item mentioned in the Movie Jaws. When the scene was shot on the Dock packing and checking equipment being put on the boat before going out to hunt down the big guy, “SMG” was third on the Checklist and put on the Boat. See the Old Movie (AGAIN) :>)

Double and Quad Barrel

Presently i have two johnson smg spearguns. One is a two barrell and the other is a quad barrell. If you dont know about these guns, they launch the spears via a .22 cal blank cartridge, same type as a nail gun uses. The were manufactored in 1974 and i have an invoice offer from a company in New zealand to the USAF.I was told that these two guns were used by security divers for the film crew of the movie "the deep". If anyone is interested in aquiring these collectors items please e-mail me directly atsjforbes1@Aol.com. i will be asking 1200.00 each or both for a discount.The are complete systems with carrying bags , darts and cartridges (no .22 cal blanks). They really are in excellent condition.

The speargun was made in 1974 serial number is low # C374. Comes with spear and accessories. This speargun has never been used or in the water. No scratches in perfect condition. The price is firm, no haggling $1500 This speargun is fully functional and ready to use. It should be a wall hanger on display.

If your looking for Tapmatic for Spearfishing I have two that are like new no scratches or gouges have only been use a couple of times look brand new. I will sell for $850 each as a set the serial number on these two spearguns are only two numbers off. Or I sell either one as a single for $950. I also have one double barrel speargun with original reel in excellent that I will sell for $850.

We'll start where the history of these guns begins- my own personal piece. I'll try to continually update this as I learn more but for right now my knowledge is pretty limited. What I know is as follows:

• Created sometime in the mid 60's- most likely '64, and I believe it's a prototype piece.
• My grandfather worked on the design (internals) and possibly was the tool and dye maker for them as well.
• This particular gun has no safety stickers (or residue indicating that they were once there).
• It's been used once, and has remained in a closet for over 40 years. No spears, box or cartridges.
